This guide covers the Ice Shot
Deadeye build, a bow setup for the
Ranger that freezes enemies and then finishes the strong ones with one big shot. It is written for someone playing their first or second character, so it explains why each piece is there.
Why this build
Fubgun rates his Ice Shot Deadeye in the top tier of his 0.5.5 league start list, and the KamiLabs write-up of that list describes a fast start with one or two buttons for clearing endgame maps. Antosha at NextTier and Michael R. at Switchblade Gaming each publish their own version with the same core skills, and NextTier says no unique item is required.
It has real weaknesses, which the leveling write-up is open about. The build depends heavily on your bow, Act 2 is its weakest stretch, Snipe takes practice, and you survive on Evasion and positioning, not on a large Life pool.
How it works
Everything revolves around Freeze.
Ice Shot fires an arrow that bursts into a cone of ice shards and builds Freeze quickly.
Freezing Mark makes one target easier to Freeze, and when that target freezes you get a buff that adds extra Cold damage.
Snipe is the payoff. You channel it and release at the right moment, which the game calls Perfect Timing. A Perfect Timing release on a frozen enemy consumes the Freeze for a stronger explosion. Use
Barrage first so that the Snipe repeats.
Herald of Ice handles the rest: enemies you shatter explode and damage the pack around them.
Skills by stage
Use the stage bar to switch between early campaign, late campaign and endgame.
Your main attack until level 31. Named for this stage by both the KamiLabs write-up and NextTier.
Fire a few of these first. Lightning Arrow beams chain to the arrows and set off extra bursts.
Add around level 22 for strong enemies and bosses.
Add around level 22. A level 7 gem needs character level 22, 24 Dexterity and 24 Intelligence in the 0.5 data.
Use it right before a Snipe on a boss.
Spirit skill until Herald of Ice. Reserves 30 Spirit.
Your main attack from level 31. Needs a level 9 gem, which the game data lists at character level 31 and 57 Dexterity.
Release with Perfect Timing on a frozen target.
Keep this on your second weapon set.
Replaces Herald of Thunder. Enemies you shatter explode. Reserves 30 Spirit.
Use it right before a Snipe on a boss.
From level 41. Drop it near a boss before you start the rotation.
Use it before the boss rotation.
Grants a Frenzy Charge when you freeze an enemy, on a cooldown. Reserves 30 Spirit.
Clears packs and builds freeze on bosses.
Your main boss damage. Release with Perfect Timing on a frozen target.
On your second weapon set. Reapply it whenever it has been used up.
Spreads damage when frozen enemies shatter. Reserves 30 Spirit.
Use it right before a Snipe on a boss.
Drop it near a boss before you start the rotation.
Use it before the boss rotation.
Frenzy Charges add extra repeats to Barrage. Reserves 30 Spirit.
More Evasion while you avoid being hit. Reserves 30 Spirit.
Early campaign, levels 1 to 30
Ice Shot is not available yet, so you level on
Lightning Arrow and
Lightning Rod. Fire a few Rods ahead of you, then shoot Lightning Arrow at the pack. Its beams chain to the Rods and set off more bursts.
Around level 22 you can add
Snipe and
Freezing Mark, even though Lightning Arrow still does most of the clearing. This gives you time to practise the Snipe timing before it matters.
Late campaign, from level 31
Ice Shot needs a level 9 gem, which the game data lists at character level 31 with 57 Dexterity. Make one from an Uncut Skill Gem as soon as you can use it and swap your main attack.
Herald of Ice replaces
Herald of Thunder at this point, and
Tornado Shot comes in from level 41.
Endgame
The main skills stay the same. You fill out their supports and add
Wind Dancer for extra Evasion. NextTier fills the support sockets on Snipe first, then Ice Shot, then Herald of Ice, then Freezing Mark.
Snipe and Freezing Mark can wait until around level 22.
NextTier’s order. If you are short a socket, drop the last support on the skill.
Rotation
Put Freezing Mark on your second weapon set and your damage skills on the first, as both Fubgun's setup and NextTier do.
Fire a few Lightning Rods, then shoot Lightning Arrow into the pack.
On strong enemies, use Barrage, then release Snipe with Perfect Timing.
Apply Freezing Mark from your second weapon set at the start of an area.
Shoot Ice Shot at packs. Reapply Freezing Mark after it has been used up.
Mapping: apply Freezing Mark, then clear with Ice Shot and let Herald of Ice spread the damage.
Boss step 1: drop Tornado Shot near the boss.
Boss step 2: use Ice-Tipped Arrows.
Boss step 3: apply Freezing Mark from your second weapon set.
Boss step 4: shoot Ice Shot until the boss freezes.
Boss step 5: use Barrage, then release Snipe with Perfect Timing on the frozen boss.
Equipment
Your bow matters more than anything else, so check every bow you find. NextTier, Switchblade and BoostMatch all say to raise your Fire, Cold and Lightning resistances to the 75% cap. Put Life and Evasion on your armour as well. NextTier gives about 2,500 Life for entering maps and 4,000 or more for hard endgame content.

Nothing here needs a unique item.
Hyrri's Ire is a body armour with Evasion and extra Cold damage, and
Cadiro's Gambit is a quiver. NextTier and Switchblade both name these as later upgrades, not requirements.
Passive tree
The sources name the notables, the larger passives. Switchblade groups some of them into phases, but none gives a full order, so the order on this page is ours. The paths between notables were worked out on the 0.5 tree. Early points go toward attack speed and projectile damage. Later ones add Freeze and Cold penetration through Deep Freeze and Snowpiercer, and defence through Beastial Skin and The Wild Cat.
Ascendancy
You pass through Projectile Proximity Specialisation on the way to Endless Munitions, which adds a projectile to your skills. Gathering Winds comes next and gives you Tailwind when you use skills, though you lose it when hit. Mirage Deadeye is last. NextTier takes these four in this order, with Point Blank as its choice at the first one. BoostMatch lists Point Blank, Endless Munitions and Mirage Deadeye too, in a different order, and names Tailwind where this guide has Gathering Winds. Switchblade agrees on Endless Munitions and Gathering Winds, then goes elsewhere.
