The God of War Laufey release date is now May 20, 2027, exclusively on PlayStation 5. Santa Monica Studio announced the three-month push on its official X account on November 4, 2026, moving the game off its previous February 16, 2027 slot. The studio said it will spend the extra time "putting in the finishing touches" and will share more updates soon, as reported by Engadget and Eurogamer.

God of War Laufey delayed: what changed since February 16
Until early November, God of War Laufey was tracking toward a February 16, 2027 release. That changed on November 4, 2026, when Santa Monica Studio posted a short statement confirming the new May 20, 2027 date, as covered by Engadget.
Santa Monica Studio's statement on the delay
Santa Monica Studio's own statement, quoted by Eurogamer and Engadget, included these lines:
- "We don't take for granted the trust placed in our studio to make an extraordinary experience worthy of the passion and dedication of our fans. With this in mind, we've made the decision to delay God of War Laufey's release to May 20th, 2027."
- "We will make the most of each moment until then by putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential."
The studio added that it will be back to share more updates soon. As Eurogamer notes, it stopped short of giving a reason for the delay, though it did say what the extra time is for.
Why the press points to a crowded February
This part is press interpretation, not something Santa Monica Studio itself stated. Eurogamer notes that February 2027 was already stacked with major releases, including the Fable reboot, Persona 4 Revival, and Metro 2039, and frames the move to May as a way for the PS5 exclusive to sidestep that traffic jam. The studio's own statement does not make this connection; it's the outlet's reading of the timing.
What's still unannounced about God of War Laufey
Several questions remain open heading toward the new May 2027 date:
- PC, Steam, or Xbox: No version beyond PS5 has been announced.
- The next Kratos game: Eurogamer reports that, according to the developer, the next Kratos game will connect to the events of Laufey. What form that game takes is still open.
- Further updates: Santa Monica Studio says it will share more information soon, but hasn't specified a timeline for that.
