The PlayStation 5 gets a surprise new update for November 2025, featuring some big improvements to one of the console's newest features.
Sony has surprised fans with a brand-new update for the PlayStation 5, bringing some new features to the console's Welcome Hub. While there aren't any other changes beyond updates to the PlayStation 5 Welcome Hub, it still gives fans eager for more customization options plenty to check out, including a new dynamic background that adjusts with the seasons and a widget that displays a user's recent game stats.
Back in September 2024, a new PlayStation 5 update added the Welcome Hub, a feature that allows players to customize their console experience with widgets, backgrounds, and more. Following the release of the 24.06-10.00.00 update last year, PlayStation 5 users are now met with the Welcome Hub whenever they turn their console on. From here, players can add, remove, or resize widgets and change the background of the Hub. This allows players to get "at a glance" information, such as controller battery, online friends, wishlist details, trophies, and much more.
Despite being over one year old, the PS5's Welcome Hub has received minimal updates. Thankfully, that's now changed, as a new update is now available to users worldwide with some new features to check out. Not only does the update add a new dynamic background that changes throughout the year, but it also introduces a new widget in the Welcome Hub that lets players view their recent game stats at a glance. The widget will display information about a user's most recently played games, including total hours played, number of sessions, trophies earned, and more. So for those who have been obsessing over ARC Raiders, you can now quickly see just how long you've spent topside.
Unfortunately, this still isn't the type of customization that fans have been begging for. Unlike the days of the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, the PS5 does not allow for themes outside of the classic PlayStation ones that were first introduced for the PS1's 30th anniversary. These themes first rolled out in December 2024, but were removed in January 2025 as Sony only intended for them to be available for a limited time. However, after a huge amount of requests from fans, they made their return in April and are now available permanently.
The PS5 did receive a handy new update back in October, adding a useful new feature that allowed users to check the serial number of their controllers and console directly from the settings. While it wasn't a ground-breaking addition, it is handy to be able to check the serial number of the console without having to physically examine the PS5 itself. And it's also better than the usual stability improvements that PS5 users have grown custom to.
