It has been reported that PlayStation's Horizon series, which began in 2017 with Zero Dawn, has now passed 40m sales.
These latest figures come from a Korean news article, which was translated on ResetEra. If accurate, that means the Horizon series has sold roughly 2m copies in the last few months. In July of this year as part of a filed legal complaint against Tencent, where Sony accused the Chinese technology conglomerate of ripping off its Horizon video game franchise with its upcoming release Light of Motiram, the PlayStation maker said the Horizon franchise had sold in excess of 38m units.
As for the most recent Horizon figures, they were shared as part of a report on the upcoming MMO spin-off from NCSoft, known as Steel Frontiers. "It is an MMORPG currently in development, based on the 'Horizon' series of open-world action adventure games with cumulative global sales reaching 40m units, designed to be playable on mobile devices," the translation reads.
"This new title was described by Co-CEO Park Byung-moo during the Q3 earnings conference call as one that 'earned a standing ovation'. It garnered significant attention as the main highlight of NCSoft's opening speech on the 13th."
To compare Horizon's latest alleged sales numbers with another of Sony's properties, in 2022 PlayStation announced that Santa Monica's God of War reboot had surpassed 23m units sold. That same year, the company announced that its sequel God of War Ragnarök had sold 5.1m copies in its first week, making it officially the fastest-selling first-party PlayStation title to date. By November 2023, PlayStation revealed God of War Ragnarök had sold through more than 15m units worldwide across both PlayStation 4 and PS5.
Meanwhile earlier this month, Sony's shared its latest financial results, where it indicated that Ghost of Yōtei had sold-through 3.3m units as of November 2, 2025. That's roughly within one month of its release.
Eurogamer has asked Sony for comment on Horizon's sales figures.
Looking at what's next for the series, Horizon Steel Frontiers is described as a "fierce survival adventure", in which players take on the role of machine hunters in a region known as Deathlands. The team promises "large-scale raids" and an "advanced combat system" on the game's eventual release.
While it is currently slated for release on mobile and PC, last week executive producer Lee Song shed a bit more light on why NCSoft's game isn't coming to PlayStation, suggesting excluding the platform was not NCSoft's decision.
For more on Horizon, earlier this year Aloy actress Ashly Burch spoke to Eurogamer about her thoughts on AI, and why she believes developer Guerrilla replacing all actors with robots is "not going to happen".
